Das Nixie SPL basiert auf dem Gehäuse meines beliebten NixieTherm und arbeitet mit einer russischen IV-26 VFD Röhre mit 7 hellleuchtenden großen grünen Punkten.
The Nixie SPL is based on the enclosure of my famous NixieTherm. This device uses a Russian IV-26 display tube that has seven bright green dots to indicate the sound level.

Es ist ein Anzeigegerät für Schalldruckpegel und soll z.B. Kindern helfen, ihren Lärmdrang ein wenig zu dämpfen; nicht nur zu Hause sondern auch im Kindergarten / Tagesstätte oder Schule.
Oder wie wäre es in einer Gaststätte, um die angeregten Stammtischgespräche optisch zu "untermalen"? Oder einfach nur zur Kontrolle, ob der Fernseher nicht schon wieder zu laut ist.
This Sound Level Meter can be used to display ambient sound levels and to teach children to play quietly. This is not only great for homes; it also works well at schools, daycares, and other similar settings. If you’re a pub ore restaurant owner, why not have one to show the noise levels at a guest table? For home users, why not use one to tell if the television is too loud?

Einmalig auf dem Markt:
Anders als bei den üblichen großen dreifarbigen "Lärmampeln" oder den vielen Geräten mit reiner Digitalanzeige hat das Nixie SPL ein nach oben "wandernder" grüner Leuchtpunkt zusammen mit der Skalenbeschriftung in dB(A) und Sone (Lautstärkeeindruck) einen ungefähren Anhaltspunkt über den aktuellen Schallpegel. Ist der obere Punkt erreicht und die Lautstärke steigt noch weiter an, so leuchten als Warnung alle 7 Punkte gleichzeitig auf. Über eine Lötbrücke kann die Anzeige von Punk- auf Leuchtband umgeschaltet werden, falls ein nach oben steigender Balken besser gefällt.

There are no other devices like this on the market:
The NixieSPL is much more advanced that the Red-Yellow-Green "noise traffic lights" or the digital display read out devices. This device uses a green dot that moves up and down the height of the tube to indicate sound levels. The higher the position, the louder the ambient sound. This display is more precise than the typical traffic light setup and more intuitive than the digital readout SPL meters. The scale has markings in dB(A) and Sone (Loudness). This provides the viewer with a good representation of the actual noise level. If the maximum scale is reached and the levels continue to rise, all seven dots will illuminate to warn users.
With one simple modification, a user can switch the display from a single dot moving up and down to a more traditional bar graph output. To make this change, simply connect the solder jumper on the board and your device will now operate in bar graph mode.

Für denjenigen, der einen schnellen Überblick über den Geräuschpegel haben möchte, dem aber Digitalgeräte zu schwierig sind zum Ablesen, die "Ampeln" zu groß, zu auffällig und zu ungenau – für den ist das Nixie SPL als Designgerät die erste Wahl – oder auch nur als "lebendes" Schmuckstück auf dem offenen Regal.
The NixieSPL is appealing to a wide range of people. It provides a quick overview of the ambient noise levels with the precision of a digital SPL meter and the ease of the traffic light readout. The device works great as a decoration too – simply leave one on your desk or bookshelf and watch it react to its surroundings.

Durch die sehr helle Skalenbeleuchtung in warmweiß kann das Nixie SPL wunderbar auch als Zusatz- oder Nachtlicht eingesetzt werden, und dabei ist es auch noch besonders Strom sparend! Durch eine spezielle Technik werden weniger als 1 W bei 5 V verbraucht; eine Eigenerwärmung ist nicht feststellbar. Die Versorgung erfolgt einfach über einen Mini-USB-Anschluss.
Thanks to the super bright (warm white) scale illumination, the Nixie SPL can also be used as nightlight. As an added bonus, it is extremely energy efficient. The special circuit design consumes less than 1W @ 5V of power. The device remains cool because of the efficient LED lighting and the device is powered through your computer’s USB port or by most cell phone chargers that use a mini USB plug.

Das Nixie SPL arbeitet mit einer echten auf die Gehörempfindlichkeit abgestimmten dB(A) Bewertung des Mikrofonsignals mit aufwendigem aktiven mehrpoligem Filter sowie Präzisionsgleichrichter samt Integrationsstufe und kann zwischen der Darstellung von Mittelwert (RMS) auf Spitzenwert (Peak) mit einer Lötbrücke umgeschaltet werden.
The Nixie SPL operates with a true dB(A) weighted display. The microphone is matched to the sensitivity of human hearing and the OP amp based active multipole equalization, full wave precision rectifier and integration circuit ensure that the display is accurate. The display speed can be switched between average (RMS) and Peak with a simple solder jumper.

Durch die interne Versorgungsspannung von max. 25 V sind Aufbau und eventuelle Messungen völlig ungefährlich. Jedoch ist es nicht unbedingt für Elektronik-Einsteiger geeignet, weil auch erstmals 8 "große" SMD-LEDs (Baugröße 3528) für die Skalenbeleuchtung verwendet wurden, die aber dennoch mit Pinzette einfach zu handhaben sind.
This device is safe to operate; the maximum internal voltage is only 25V. However, this kit is not intended for electronic beginners because there are a few surface mount components used. This device uses 8 surface mount LEDs (3528 outline) for the scale illumination and requires some skill to properly place on the baord. Nevertheless these LEDs can be easily handled by tweezers.

Die Anzeigt selbst kann über ein von außen zugängliches Trimmpotentiometer abgeglichen oder sogar kalibriert werden. Die erzielbare Genauigkeit gegenüber einem Profiinstrument ist dabei absolut verblüffend (im Bild links ist das Nixie SPL zusammen mit einem "Nixie" Brüel & Kjær 2203 Precision Sound Level Meter).
The display range can be adjusted by an easily accessible trimmer potentiometer, even after the device is fully assembled. Once calibrated, this device will have accuracy comparable to a professional SPL meter (left picture shows the Nixie SPL together with a "Nixie" Brüel & Kjær 2203  Precision Sound Level Meter).
